Finally! Finally, the much awaited Google PR update has happened In spite of convincing rumors that the PR system will be dropped by google. The PR system has always been a mystery for webmasters around the globe and everyone seems to have his/her own opinion about the google PR algorithm.

Google generally used to update the toolbar PR once in 3months.This time it was expected to be in mid September or early October.People waited impatiently to get the results so as to know on what they will have to spend their budget.

The page rank thing has been already scrapped in the google webmaster tools section and when asked for why it was scrapped, the answer was that they didn’t want to show that anymore.Then why are they updating the PR toolbar?? That’s a million dollar question that has to be answered and will be eventually by the Google Gods.We just have no other option but to wait like the students in India waiting for their call from the IT companies that recruited them on campus.It may… may never come.

Blogs and websites must always be optimized for the search engines as that is the sole purpose of having it online. Only that can give you more visitors, more publicity and more reach among people. here is a quick tip on how to make your wordpress blogs that are self hosted.

By default the Wordpress url would be something like:

www.domain.com/?p=123
You will have to make it SEO friendly. Having numbers padding up would make no real sense for the search engines.This is a no brainer.

You can make it SEO friendly, i.e look like

http://www.domain.com/postname.html

http://www.domain.com/category/postname.html

Both are SEO friendly and have their usage.

The former is widely used one as it keeps the structure simple. The latter can be used in blogs that rely heavily on categories. Also, some wordpress themes are made such that they only display a certain number of posts from each category on the home page. In such cases, it is a must to have the latter type with category in it.

To implement this url permalink structure chage:

goto Settings -> Permalinks in your Wordpress dashboard.

Select custom structure and type either of these.

/%category%/%postname%/

/%postname%/

and Save it. You are done optimizing your wordpress site url.

If Blogger/Blogspot is for simplicity , wordpress is for versatility.

The beautiful themes and control over the system of Word press blogs has made many switch to wordpress from their blogger/blogspot blogs or at least think of switching. If you are one of them, here is an easy way to do that.

1. Login to your Blogger account.

1. In Dashboard, go to your Settings > Basic > Blog Tools > Export Blog.

Click on the Image To ENLARGE it.

2. When you click ” Download Blog”, you get prompt to download an blogger XML file. Save it to your hard disk.

It would be something like : blog-MM-DD-YYYY.XML

3. Visit this site : Blogger2Wordpress Conversion Utility

4. Browse the .xml file that you exported from Blogger and click Convert. It’ll save as a .xml file as wordpress-wxr.XML.

5. ***IMPORTANT – Browse to where you downloaded the file and RENAME THE EXTENSION AS A .WXR FILE***. The work do be done in Blogger part is now over.

6. Login to your Wordpress account

go to Tools > Import > Wordpress.

7. Now you have your blog backed up for Wordpress. Don’t do anything with the Blogger/Blogspot blog now.

8. When you switch the domains and update the DNS, the blog should work fine at wordpress but for the permalink structure.

9. The main difference between the permalink of Blogger/Blogspot and Wordpress is that:

i. Articles like “the”, “a”, and “an” are skipped in the url in Blogger/blogspot while wordpress maintains it.

ii. The url of Blogge/?Blogspot blog is truncated and restricted while in Wordpress it is much bigger. How big? I dont know. I haven’t seen any of my post urls truncated till now.

iii. By default the Wordpress url would be something like:

www.domain.com/?p=123

The Blogger/Blogspot url would be like:

http://www.domain.com/YYYY/MM/postname.html

10. The first thing we should do is to make the permalink structure same beofre going to further levels.

Goto “Permalinks” in your WordPress dashboard

Select -> Custom structure.

Input ->

/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html

and save it.

Now, your Wordpress blog will also have the permalink structure as:

http://www.domain.com/YYYY/MM/postname.html

11. To make it exactly similar to Blogger/Blogspot url sans the truncation effect and stuffs,

add the following code to the top of your .htaccess file which can be found in root directory of your wordpress installation.


RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^([0-9]{4})/([0-9]{1,2})/([^/]+)\.html$ $1/$2/$3/ [QSA,R=301,L]

We are done.

SEO – as we all already know is Search Engine Optimization.In very simple terms, it is a ongoing process where you make your website/blog search engine friendly.Search engine friendly here can mean many things.Page rank is only one among those factors.The ultimate purpose of SEO is obviously to get top search engine positions and results for certain keywords that are essentially associated with their niche.

Lets take an example here.Assume that this site of mine called Technowpedia wants to get top results and positions is search engines like google.The first thing that i will have to decide before thinking of SEO is for what keywords do i need to rank top on the search engine.As this site is a Web Technology related site, it would be obviously sensible to think for ranking on keywords like “software” , ” computer gadgets” and so on.

If a user types “software” in google and the very first result in Technowpedia.com, this is what we need to achieve.I wouldn’t be happy if someone types “SSN” or any other insensible and low profile term and my websites throws up as the first result.

What are keywords?

Though technical competence is a must in any field, as a webmaster you will also think on the lines of what a normal person who wants to find things on the Internet will think.The keywords that you would like to work on for getting top results for your site have to be realistic and sensible.

If an average user had to buy a computer online, the search terms he would probably use would be:

computer online
online computer sale
computer sales online
buy computer online
where to buy computer online and so on.

So, we need to study those things before optimizing our site for best results.
