Do you also get really irritated when you see the number of unread mails flashes on your windows log on page or did you have a friend or a guest use your computer to see his mails but left a few unread and now you can’t get rid of them. Well, as this problem has puzzled many people all over, we thought it would be great if we gave you the solution.
What XP does is that it retrieves the information of the message count from all accounts such as Hotmail and MSN or those used on Outlook or Outlook Express. The count is stored at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail for each account that is ever checked on the computer.
What you need to essentially do is go to the windows registry, and change the value of the MessageExpiryDays key to 0. As the name suggests, this will make the message count expire the same day.
At times this key may not exist. Do not panic. Instead, make a DWORD by the same name (that is MessageExpiryDays) and set the value of that to 0.
For those who do not wish to tamper with the windows registry themselves, they can download a registry file from the net, in the form of a text file, remove the .txt extension and use it to do the work.
