Internet: A computer network consisting of a worldwide network of computer networks that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission.

Simply put, the Internet has revolutionized how media is consumed by people around the world. It enables anyone, anywhere to have an input no matter what race, religion or wealth.

The Internet is changing every second of every day, content and technology updates mean faster and more complex data transmissions can be sent and received. Here in 2009 the average Internet user in the USA now receives 2.3mbps and this figure is growing.

With such heavy traffic, the modern Internet needs fast changing technology to keep up with demand, these kind of constant updates have existed since Internet providing became a commercial industry in the early 90’s. Back then, there were no images or page layouts like there are today, a user would send and receive data by text commands, it was only in 1991 that the first user friendly interface was developed at the University of Minnesota.

Mosaic – Courtesy of nzeldes.comThe first graphical Internet browser (Mosaic) was developed in 1993 and the lead developer of this software went on to produce Netscape. It was also in this year that having a web site was popular with corporations and government organizations. The web site www.whitehouse.gov was setup in this year. Over the next 3 years, tens of thousands of Internet servers powered up all over the world and the full power of the open Internet was felt by many people who wanted to be a part of this amazing new fad.

Google in 1998 – Courtesy of abhisays.comIn 1998 Google appeared on the scene to provide a reliable search index for all the information on the worlds web site network which by this time is around 300 million!

In 1999 Telecommunication giants started looking at optical networking solutions to improve speed and performance of the Internet for their customers and the High-Speed Internet boom was on the horizon.

In the early years of the 21st century all kinds of third party software was being created by companys and communities utilising the power of the internet to improve the way individuals would receive and send information to one another. For most, the Internet became a great means to communicate with friends, family and other people on the net without any extra cost what-so-ever. Users could send and receive photos, videos and other recordings at comfortable speeds and digitally express themselves in many, many formats. This gave birth to the term “Web 2.0” in 2004.

Web 2.0 isn’t a technological update as such but more an idea of developers using the Internet to produce interactive communications media in a well rounded, securely functioning way. Modern super sites like Myspace, Youtube and Wikipedia are examples of web 2.0 developers using Internet communications to produce a mass of user created content for all to see.

Harnessing the power of all humankind means the Internet has endless possibility and can only evolve further to produce more means to more content!
