There are times when our keyboards cease to work and you may still want to access the computer for the day or access the Internet and reply to a important mail and other official communication.In this emergency there are ways of handling this situation without a keyboard and just with the help of a Mouse.This technique is not just useful in this case but also in many regular situations where privacy and security is a matter of concern.

The Windows XP OS offers a built in functionality called the OSK ( On Screen KeyBoard) that comes in handy at these situations.It is nothing but a virtual keyboard that you can bring up on your monitor and instead of typing, you will just be clicking the keys using your mouse.It is very simple to use and can be used for all purposes be it mailing, in word processors or any other application for that matter.

This is How You can access the OSK functionality of Windows:

Start -> Run -> osk -> OK .

There are many malicious programs that are circulated via the Internet and probably a key logger that stores information about all that you are typing can be resident on your system or a Trojan may send crucial information about your typing to an external pc.To avoid all these you can use this Virtual Keyboard.

I have already written about using just your keyboard to fill forms online.My earlier article on Form Filling With a KeyBoard was about highlighting, selecting and enabling the check boxes and combo boxes in a form.This time it is about getting back to a text filed when you have just overlooked and passed over it. More often we just skip a field that has to be filled and go to the next field without filling the previous field.

logging into your mail account, you would probably miss the username section and go to the password section when using the “Tabs” keys in the keyboard for navigation. Now, how do you get back to the username filed?The common way would be to keep pressing tabs till all the fields are gone and then back to square one.However the other easiest way around would be to use a Keyboard short cut. The Keyboard shortcut to move the focus to the previous focus element is “SHIFT + TAB“.

There is a functionality in the Windows Operating Systems that is called the Virtual Keyboard.The virtual keyboard as the name suggests is an virtual keyboard which comes up on the PC and you can use it to input text, or even fill forms with the virtual keyboard.You key in the characters in the text field/ word processor or online forms by clicking the characters of the virtual keyboard.

So, how do we bring the virtual keyboard a.k.a On screen keyboard??

START -> RUN -> osk -> OK.

This will bring the On screen keyboard on the Screen and you can key in.

Advanatages of OSK:

1.OSK is increasingly used in Online form filling , especially that requires authorizations and personal information like passwords, bank info and so on.

2.OSK can be used when your keyboard isn’t functioning.

Disadvantages:

I wouldn’t call them disadvantages but they are not just suitable and apt for long typing jobs.You cannot use it ideally for typing a blog post, or an article.You can of course use them for short and simple jobs like Form filling, e-mail replying and so on.
