The biggest internet news of the week that just got over has to be the series of attacks on the internet social networking giant Facebook. Going by the latest news available, this leading social networking site was constantly under attack by hackers who tried to steal the personal information of the users. As many as five different attacks have been reported in just seven days. What the hackers were trying to do was to capitalize on the trust generated by site to achieve the theft by sending fake messages that included details of the members.
There were rogue applications that acted as an identity theft tool that tried to convince people that their friends were having trouble locating their profile and once installed; it would spam the profile of the other friends on the list too. The recent spate of threats and attacks has brought severe criticism to Facebook’s allow-all-to-create-application policy. Technology guru’s are constantly pressurizing Facebook to review its application approval policy.
The Koobface virus that first came around in December 2008 has come back in a sophisticated avatar, difficult for many security softwares to detect. The problem is not just with Facebook. Going by what leading internet analysts have to say, the growing popularity of social networking sites for display and exchange of personal information makes it a popular target for hackers.
